Short Biography
Kirk, a lifelong resident of the 53rd District in Topeka, has a rich background rooted in education and community service. Growing up in the Kenmore neighborhood, Kirk is the son of Forrest, a Korean War Marine Veteran and retired educator, and Pat, a retired state employee. After excelling in debate and forensics at Topeka High, he pursued a B.A. in Communications from Washburn University, an M.B.A. from Wichita State University, and an Ed.D. from the University of Kansas.
Kirk's career spans diverse roles, from managing movie theaters to shaping young entrepreneurs at Youth Entrepreneurs of Kansas. In Topeka, he served as Director of Student Affairs and then Director of Admissions at Washburn University. As a Business Education Consultant for KSDE, Kirk developed curricula that met state and federal standards. He also led as Senior Vice President at CoreFirst Bank and Trust, enhancing employee retention and training. Currently, as Associate Professor and Chair of Professional Graduate Studies at Baker University, Kirk is committed to education and mentorship.
Long Biography
Kirk is a devoted member of the Topeka community, residing in the 53rd District for over 20 years. Born and raised in the Kenmore neighborhood, he draws inspiration from his family. His father, Forrest, a Korean War Marine Veteran, dedicated his life to education and union leadership as the Topeka - NEA President, while his mother, Pat, served as a state employee. Both are recognized in the Kansas State Square Dance Hall of Fame for their dedication to community service.

Kirk attended Potwin Elementary, Robinson Middle School, and graduated from Topeka High, where he shone in football, debate, and forensics, and was part of the 1989 Forensics State Championship Team. Inspired by educator Pam McComas, Kirk honed his public speaking skills, which paved the way for his future endeavors.

He earned a B.A. in Communications with minors in Business and Theatre from Washburn University, an M.B.A. from Wichita State University, and an Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Kansas. Kirk's professional journey began in movie theatre management and transitioned to a pivotal role at Youth Entrepreneurs of Kansas as Program Director, merging his interests in business and education.

Returning to Topeka, Kirk took on leadership roles at Washburn University, serving as Director of Student Affairs, then Director of Admissions. He later contributed to the Kansas State Department of Education as a Business Education Consultant, crafting curricula that adhered to state and federal standards.

In the private sector, as Senior Vice President for Retail Operations at CoreFirst Bank and Trust, Kirk significantly improved employee retention and training. While completing his doctoral dissertation, he served as a building substitute at Jardine Elementary.

Kirk's academic career flourished at Baker University, where, since 2018, he has been Associate Professor and Chair of Professional Graduate Studies. His work encompasses teaching, program development, and mentorship. A proud educational leader, he had the honor of conferring a degree to his niece in May 2024. Kirk remains dedicated to empowering students and fostering educational excellence.
